/ Irena Sendler passed away





Irena Sendler died on May 12, 2008. She was 98.


She was the most famous Polish Righteous. She saved about 2,500 children from the Warsaw Ghetto. In 1943 she was arrested by the Gestapo and placed in the Pawiak, where she was tortured and later sentenced to death. Was rescued by the Council for Aid to Jews "Zegota", which has worked throughout the occupation.
In 1965 she was honored by the Israeli Yad Vashem medal "Righteous Among the Nations", and in 1983 planted the tree in the institute.
In late 2006, inspired by President Lech Kaczynski, with the help of the association "Children of the Holocaust," efforts were made to the candidature of Irena Sendler for Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. In early 2008, this action was the initiative of the President resumed.
11 April 2007 decision of the International Chapter of the Order of Smile, at the request of 15-year old Simon Płóciennik from Zielona Gora, Irena Sendler was awarded the "Order of the Smile." She said that in addition to a letter from Pope John Paul II and the title of Righteous Among the Nations, the Order of Smile, the award from children is her greatest joy to her fate.

If people do not like her, or the Righteous, the world would look completely different today. She is a special symbol of selfless assistance in the cruel times of occupation, giving new life to more than 2,500 children.

With such people we can be proud that we are Polish women.

Irena Sendler died on 12th May, 2008. She was 98th

She was the most well-known Polish Righteous. She saved about 2,500 childern from the Warsaw Ghetto. In 1943 she was arrested by the Gestapo and Placed at Pawiak, WHERE she was tortured and later sentenced to death - fortunately, the Council for Aid to News „Żegota” rescued her (she was working with “Żegota” through the entire occupation).

In 1965 she was honoured “The Righteous Among the Nations” medal by the Yad Vashem Institute. In 1983, she planted her own tree in the Hall of Remembrance.

At the end of 2006, with the inspiration of the President of Poland Lech Kaczyński and with the help of the Children of the Holocaust Association in Poland, there have been made an effort to submit the candidature of Irena Sendler for the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2007.
On the 11th april 2007, she was awarded the “Order of Smile”, a prize given by children. She said later that in addition to a letter from Pope John Paul II and the title of the Righteous Among the Nations the Order of Smile, the award from children, is her greatest happiness.

What would we do without people like her and other Righteous Among the Nations? Surely the world of today would look a lot different. Irena Sendler was a great person. She is a special symbol of disinterested assistance in the cruel and tragic times of the war, who gave a new life to over 2500 children.

Having such great people like her as our compatriots, we can be even more proud of the fact that we are Poles.
